We are following the Revised Common Lectionary for worship. Read the lectionary at this link. This weeks reflections includes reference to Exodus 16:14-15. Hangry was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2018. Hangry is a conflation of two words: hungry and angry. When someone is short-tempered because of they are hungry, they are hangry. When the Israelites were in the wilderness after escaping Egypt, there was an increasing amount of dissatisfaction. In essence, they were hangry. In response, God provides a flaky substance in the ground each day for them to eat. They could not accumulate it. They had to trust that it would come each day. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.” The food was called manna. Manna is often translated as “what is it?” They do not know the substance of this mysterious stuff. Some suggest that it could just as likely mean “Who is it?” Not only are the people being fed physically, but they are being given a new identity by God. They have to wake up everyday trusting that God will provide. This is a completely different way of living than many of use are used to living, and yet as we experience our wildernesses, we can learn from the faith of these wilderness wanderers. -Michael Isaacs
